What We Do

THAAP works at the intersection of academic research and community-led action. Our work is dedicated to strengthening the nexus between culture and sustainable development, ensuring that heritage is not just preserved but remains a living part of society.

Research & Documentation

Research is the bedrock of every THAAP initiative. We do not view history as a static collection of past events but as a dynamic narrative to be reassessed from the "People’s Perspective." Our annual International Conferences serve as a global platform where scholars, professionals, and students converge to challenge unitary thoughts and foster multi-disciplinary discourse. Beyond academia, our commitment to documentation is evidenced by our large-scale Digital Mapping projects, such as the GIS database developed for South Punjab, which serves as a scientific baseline for heritage preservation.

Heritage Conservation

THAAP’s expertise in the built environment combines traditional wisdom with modern conservation science. Our leadership has co-authored Master Management Plans for World Heritage Sites, including the Shalamar Gardens and Lahore Fort. Our work extends to the rehabilitation of iconic institutional buildings such as St. Hilda’s Hostel (1876), Kinnaird College (1913), and the Cathedral Church of Lahore (1854). Whether it is the wooden architecture of Leepa Valley or the stone masonry of Katas Raj, THAAP ensures that every intervention respects the historical integrity of the structure.

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)

As Pakistan’s only UNESCO-accredited NGO under the 2003 Convention, THAAP plays a key role in safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). The organization works closely with communities to identify, document, and promote living traditions, rituals, knowledge systems, and cultural expressions.

Crafts & Creative Industries

THAAP is deeply committed to the holistic development and preservation of traditional crafts and creative industries. Recognizing that indigenous craftsmanship is a living archive of our history, we work tirelessly to document the intricate knowledge systems of local artisans, ensuring that their centuries-old wisdom is recorded for posterity.
Our mission extends beyond mere documentation; we actively facilitate the formal transmission of these sacred skills from master craftsmen to the younger generation, bridging the gap between ancient traditions and modern aspirations. By fostering innovation and creating strategic platforms for global visibility, THAAP provides artisans with the tools for economic sustainability and market access. Through these efforts, we aim to safeguard Pakistan’s vibrant cultural identity and ensure that our rich craft legacy remains a thriving and self-sustaining force in the global creative economy.

Language & Cultural Studies

THAAP engages in language and cultural studies to explore linguistic diversity, literary traditions, and regional identities.

Culture & Development

THAAP works at the intersection of culture and development, advocating for the integration of cultural perspectives into education, policy, and sustainable development frameworks.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

As Pakistan’s only UNESCO-accredited NGO in this field, this section highlights our advisory and safeguarding role:

Global Advisory

Providing expert advisory services to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the 2003 Convention.

National Inventorying

Development and nationwide adoption of the Community-Based Inventory (CBI) system to document living traditions.

Safeguarding Frameworks

Formulating creative safeguarding plans for endangered oral traditions, rituals, and festive events.

Knowledge Transfer

Mobilizing "Tradition Bearers" to ensure the intergenerational transfer of indigenous knowledge.

Language & Cultural Studies - Ma Boli (The Archive Focus)

Language is the ultimate carrier of culture. The THAAP Ma Boli Center is dedicated to the promotion of regional mother tongues as essential tools for education and identity. Our work involves rigorous linguistic research and multimedia documentation, such as the “River Songs of the Mors of the Sutlej” project. By archiving folklore and oral histories in digital formats, we ensure that the indigenous wisdom of Pakistan’s diverse regions remains accessible to future generations.

Culture & Development

The Sustainability Nexus

We advocate for culture as a primary driver of sustainable development. THAAP’s programs engage the youth through heritage education in schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, fostering social cohesion and peace. By integrating heritage into teaching and learning, we empower the next generation to act as custodians of their cultural rights. Our goal is to create a democratic space where diversity thrives and communities coexist in a spirit of mutual respect and harmony.
