Cultural Roots of Art and Architecture of the Punjab

The fourth annual THAAP Conference in 2013 delved into the heart of regional identity with the theme ‘Cultural Roots of Art and Architecture of the Punjab’. At THAAP, we operate on the firm belief that a society’s culture—its values, beliefs, and artistic expressions—is an evolving tapestry woven from its historical past. Under the visionary guidance of Pervaiz Vandal and Sajida Vandal, this conference sought to address the ‘identity crisis’ faced by modern Punjabis by exploring the deep-seated roots of our sub-continental heritage.

The discourse moved beyond superficial aesthetics to examine the spiritual, social, and historical dimensions of Punjabi art and architecture. Scholars and practitioners gathered to celebrate the diversity of the Punjab, aiming for a future that resembles ‘a variety of a thousand flowers’ rather than a stagnant, unitary thought. By reassessing history from the people’s perspective, THAAP provided a much-needed platform for teachers and researchers to engage in a fresh, productive debate. As with every THAAP endeavor, the knowledge generated was meticulously documented and disseminated to ensure that our rich heritage continues to inspire future generations of architects and artists.

At the heart of this conference was the belief that ‘Life’ itself—the social interactions, local traditions, and human experiences—must be the focal point of any meaningful study of urbanism. While large cities often dominate architectural debates, this conference studied small towns from across the globe to understand how they sustain unique cultural identities.

As a forum dedicated to academics and professionals, THAAP used this event to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Under the guidance of Pervaiz Vandal and Sajida Vandal, the conference emphasized the role of teachers in leading the way toward a richer future—one that isn’t stagnant with a unitary thought but carries the variety of ‘a thousand flowers.’ All intellectual input from this conference was compiled and published to ensure the wide dissemination of knowledge, staying true to our mission of learning from one another.
